Colposcopy is essential to manage an abnormal smear. When having a colposcopy the neck of the womb is examined using a microscope. Abnormal areas of the cervix can then be sampled to obtain a precise diagnosis.
Often no further treatment is required but if it is then this can be done under local anaesthetic without need for hospitilisation.
